The Hotel Option
An Orlando villa is the ideal way to holiday in Florida but if you don’t want to drive or you want to be in a specific area, an Orlando hotel may be ideal for you. There are so many Orlando hotels to choose from it’s mind boggling. There always seems to be more hotel complexes being built every time we visit Orlando. The main factor in choosing a hotel is the location you want to be in.
If you are planning to spend the bulk of your holiday around the Walt Disney World Resort you would be better off looking for a hotel on Disney property or in the Lake Buena Vista area. You will be limited to the amount of bars, restaurants and small attractions within walking distance compared with International Drive.
There are a wide range of hotels on International Drive and this area is home to Universal Orlando Resort, Seaworld and other smaller attractions. Crazy golf, go-karting and dinner shows are also located around this area. The I-Drive area is also packed full of bars and restaurants within walking distance of most hotels.
If you are planning to visit the 2 Universal Studios Resort parks and you are going to eat out a lot, this area would suit you well. We have stayed in many hotels on I-Drive and around Lake Buena Vista. Some of these hotels were cheap and cheerful but we enjoyed every stay. The I-Ride Trolley is a great way to get around International Drive and it runs the full length of I-Drive.
Mr Brit’s Tips For Hotel living
You may be thinking “what tips could there possibly be for staying in a hotel”. I have discovered a few little tricks and some ‘do’s and don’ts’ to help you survive in an Orlando hotel….
Make your own beer fridge for a couple of dollars
After staying in a hotel near I-Drive years ago, the room did not have as option for a fridge. Our Little Brit’s were young in those days so we would be spending a lot of nights in the hotel. We needed to create a fridge to chill our essentials – Bud Light. Off we popped to Wal-Mart and found this polystyrene cooler box for just $1.88. Almost all hotels have free ice machines so after a few buckets of ice, we added the Buds and ‘voila’ a beer fridge for around $2.
The great thing about these boxes is that they chill the drinks a lot faster than a standard fridge would. Add a little water to the box and the drinks are ready to go in under 15 minutes. On the last day we just filled the box with rubbish and left the hotel dispose of it.
Pay extra for a fridge…
…in your hotel room if it is an option. Some hotels charge extra but you do need one for snacks and drinks. It is a good way of saving money on meals out if you are on a budget. Take a trip to a supermarket and buy some chilled food or microwaveable food. Most hotels will supply a microwave with a fridge.
Buy a toaster…
…for around $6 at Walmart to save even more money. Beans on toast or just good old toast is a good way of filling up without too much expense. I am not a food expert but I do know that beans on toast is a complete meal full of good stuff. You will get sick of eating burgers, chicken tenders and meat After a week of non stop eating out you will feel like you have been on a dinosaurs diet.
Buy all items that heat or boil…
…when you are in Orlando and don’t take a British one with you. The electric current is different in the USA and a USA adapter won’t help. We took a baby bottle steamer with us once and it usually took 3 minutes to boil back home. In Orlando it took around 30 minutes because it wasn’t made for the US current and the adapters don’t make a difference.
